Mike Murphy's dispatch reminds of Altman's old HBO political Series Tanner 88, played by Michael Murphy--no relation I think. This time however, the New Hampshire primary is moribund instead of a candidate. God I used to love politics, now it's just a source of disgust. Can you believe that the Orange monster attacks the Capitol building to overturn an election and he is on his way to win his party's nomination? Screwed up.
I'll never forget the 1968 campaign, when I told friends who went "Clean for Gene" and went up there to work for McCarthy that they were wasting their time, only they actually brought down LBJ there in the middle of Ambush Canyon. I was in the meantime on my way to Texas as part of my seven years in the war against the war I had spent a year fighting in, where we would unknowingly set in motion the events that led to the Chicago Police Riot that summer at the Democratic Convention when they couldn't put the riot control troops from Fort Hood on the street because they weren't sure which side the GIs would take, thanks to us. Politics is sure different now, but the stakes are even higher than that campaign.
What a sad story, but reality I think. The electorate has been dumbed down by technology, the media, and Donald Trump. They don’t want to hear or know truth anymore, just their fantasy TV reality show.

Mike, as a "Live Free or Dier" :-) I disagree a bit. This year's election is different than others, because it contains a former president and a current one. When was the last time that happened? Maybe back in TR's day. In four years, the Republicans will be back fighting it out even if its a party that I don't recognize. The Democratic primary is much more up in the air. I don't think South Carolina is going to benefit much from this year from Biden's run, so how hard are they going to fight to keep it? I will play the sage Political Pundit, at least on the Internet, "Time will tell." ;-)
When I was 11, I was fascinated watching Kennedy-Nixon debates. Been a political junkie ever since.
But Mike, this must be so much sadder for you.

I have family there and half of my DNA is from there. It might come back again.
Heartbreaking. So much loss and pain in our politics, but a wonderful, beautifully written essay.

This race needs to be handicapped... What second place percentage of the vote would be considered a win by Nikki ? 40% 38%
Wonderful read, Mike--thanks for posting it.
was looking forward to Mike from NH, thanks for the personal insight & observation.
